Moments of panic and horror were experienced this Friday afternoon on the busy Augusto B. Leguía Avenue, in downtown Chiclayo, following an explosion at a mechanic's shop that claimed the life of a young worker and left a woman with serious injuries.
The incident occurred at an establishment named Ticolandia, located at 2221 Augusto B. Leguía Avenue, just a few meters from the intersection with Eufemio Lora y Lora Avenue.
According to preliminary investigations by the National Police of Peru, the detonation was likely caused by the bursting of a carbide tank while maintenance work was being performed on a vehicle.
The magnitude of the explosion was devastating. The young mechanic, identified as Víctor Manuel Mechán More, died instantly; meanwhile, Mirla Vásquez Ayay, who was inside the premises, was seriously injured and sustained severe facial trauma.
Personnel from the Chiclayo Rescue Unit arrived at the scene immediately to provide first aid and transported the female victim to the Lambayeque Regional Hospital, where she is receiving specialized medical care.
The area was cordoned off by authorities to allow for the work of forensic experts and representatives of the Public Prosecutor's Office, who ordered the removal of the body and its transfer to the Chiclayo central morgue.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the causes of the accident and to verify whether the workshop had the necessary safety measures and permits in place
