A man suspected of robbery was shot and killed by police after a vehicle chase Sunday night, according to the Houston Police Department.
The department received a report of a robbery in the Bellaire and Kirkwood area around 5:57 p.m. Sunday, according to police. At approximately 7:07 p.m., officers spotted a vehicle believed to be involved in that robbery.
"The suspect refused to stop when officers attempted to stop the suspect that they believed to be involved in that robbery," HPD Assistant Chief Christy Smith told reporters at the scene Sunday night. "Once the chase ended, officers gave multiple verbal commands to the suspect for several minutes, telling him to please drop his gun.
"The suspect did refuse to drop the gun. Multiple officers discharged their weapons," Smith added.
HPD said in a Monday afternoon news release that seven officers fired gunshots at the man, who was holding two guns of his own, according to the department. The shooting occurred in the 8800 block of Aspen Meadow Drive in Southwest Houston.
Smith said the man who was shot, who she said was in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene by Houston Fire Department paramedics. Smith said the investigation was ongoing and no officers were injured.
HPD said it would release body-worn camera footage from the involved officers within 30 days
