A pregnant nurse was killed by two vehicles while she was crossing the road in Bago City, Province of Negros Occidental.
The victim was identified as Maria Angela Buendia, 36 years old, and is on her sixth month of pregnancy.
Buendia was crossing the national highway in Barangay Taloc, Bago City using the pedestrian lane when two vehicles hit her evening on June 1, 2025.
The pregnant nurse was thrown meters away, on to the opposite lane upon impact.
Buendia was about to report for her night shift duty at a hospital in Valladolid town, about 10 kilometers away from Bago City .
“Hustisya talaga. Siyempre dalawang buhay ang kinuha sa amin, dalawang driver din ang ipapapabilanggo namin. Nakita na niya ang manugang kong naglalakad sa pedestrian (lane), nagtuloy-tuloy pa siya,” Carmela Buendia, mother in law of the victim, said.
The baby is found to be a boy who would have been Buendia's second child.
The husband is still reportedly shocked by the incident, and could not talk about the matter yet.
According to the investigation done by the Bago City Police, the first vehicle that hit the victim was driven by one Philip Jansen Cantiller.
Cantiller was headed for Bacolod City from Cauayan town.
When Buendia was thrown to the opposite lane on impact, another vehicle driven by one Salvador Castro ran over her.
“Hindi namin sinadya ang nangyari. Aksidente lang talaga,” Cantiller said.
“Sa family, may right sila. Hindi namin sinadya, aksidente. Bigla na lang nangyari. Masakit ang nangyari sa kanya, tapos buntis pa siya. Sorry, sorry, hindi namin sinasadya,” Castro said.
Buendia’s family is set to file charges for reckless imprudence resulting to homicide against the drivers.
“Sa mga may-ari ng sasakyan na tinted, huwag magbiyahe kung madilim dahil hindi makita ang tumatawid kahit pa ang ganung area ay may mga ilaw,” Lt. Col. Ariel Pico, officer in charge of Bago City Police Station, has reminded drivers.
