The Scottish city's train station is temporarily closed, with all trains suspended. The dome of the historic 19th-century building collapsed.
The fire also completely destroyed The Sexy coffee shop and a hair salon, both located in the station building. Residents were evacuated, and there were no injuries.
The building survived two world wars. During the First World War, part of the underground section was used as a temporary morgue for soldiers who died from wounds en route home. During the Second World War, defensive measures were taken at Glasgow Central Station, including painting the glass roof black. This was done to prevent light from penetrating during the bombing raids
