Two Charleston police officers who fatally fired their weapons upon an armed suspect on King Street last year will not be facing any charges or disciplinary actions, the Charleston Police Department announced Friday.
CPD said the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division had conducted their independent investigation as is customary with officer-involved shootings and cleared the officers of any wrongdoing in connection to the shooting that occurred on Nov. 21, 2024.
Video previously released by CPD showed officers Anthony Vazquez and Darren Schlegel yell to the man involved to "show me your hands!" and "take your hands out of your pocket!" and finally "Put the gun down!" before firing the fatal shots.
The coroner's office identified the deceased man as Andrew Williams, 37, who died at the Medical University of South Carolina at 10:47 a.m. from a gunshot wound.
Both officers had been placed on administrative leave with pay while state police concluded their investigation.
