A 55-year-old Cuban immigrant, America Thayer, was beheaded by her 42-year-old boyfriend, Alexis Saborit, before Alexis threw her body and dumped it on a street. According to her coworkers, Thayer had been in a long-term relationship with Alexis, but domestic violence was a "consistent problem" with the couple, and Alexis had been convicted for domestic assault in 2017. However, a pre-trial no-contact order against Alexis was removed on request of Thayer, who promised that they would seek any help necessary.
During the court process, Alexis claimed mental health issues, but evidence was found that determined he had made deliberate decisions on the day of the attack, such as using an 8lb-dumbbell and a machete during the attack. Nevertheless, in July 2023, Alexis was found not guilty by reason of mental illness, and he is set to be transferred to a psychiatric care facility
