Eight people were killed in a head-on collision between a truck and a pickup van in Sylhet. The incident took place at around 6 am on Sunday in Telibazar of South Surma Upazila. All the deceased were construction workers. At least 12 people were injured.
The deceased are: Sarisha Nargis (45) of Dharmapasha in Sunamganj, Mosha Munni Begum (35) of Sechni village in Dirai, Nuruj Ali (60) of Bhatipara village in Dirai, Faridul (35) of Bhatipara Noor Nagar, two brothers Azir Uddin (35) and Amir Uddin (22) of Muktikhla village in Bishwambharpur upazila; Pandab Biswas (20) of Shibpur village in Companiganj in Sylhet and Badruzzaman (45) of Putamara village.
Some of the injured said that they were going from Ambarkhana in Sylhet to Lalabazar in South Surma in a pickup truck for welding work on a building. There were 20 people in the pickup. There was a welding machine with it. When the pickup reached the Telibazar area, it collided head-on with a jackfruit-laden truck coming from the opposite direction. At that time, everyone in the pickup was thrown out.
Confirming the truth of the incident, Dakshin Surma Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Ashrafuzzaman told Prothom Alo that the truck and pickup are being seized.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) Md. Manjurul Alam said that the names and addresses of the victims are being collected. The bodies are at the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College morgue.
The deceased brothers, Azir Uddin and Amir Uddin, had been living in a rented house in the Subid Bazar area of Sylhet city for about 10 years. They worked as construction workers. Their cousin Shamim Ahmed identified the bodies of the deceased brothers at the Osmani Medical College Hospital morgue around 1 pm.
Shamim Ahmed said that he came to the hospital after seeing news of the accident and pictures of the deceased on social media Facebook and became suspicious. Later, he identified the two brothers after seeing the bodies. The family members have been informed about the matter. They have left for Sylhet. The family is mourning the loss of two brothers together
