Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic — The National Police confirmed that the officer implicated in the death of a young man in Herrera has been handed over to the Public Prosecutor's Office following an incident that took place this Friday.
The incident occurred on Arroyo Guajimía Street—also known as La Cañada de Guajimía—in the Buenos Aires sector of Herrera, within the Santo Domingo Oeste municipality.
A video circulated on social media showed the moment several officers detained a teenager next to a motorcycle, apparently during a document check.
The footage shows the teenager questioning the reason for his detention, resisting arrest, and placing a hand on an officer's shoulder.
The uniformed officer responded by firmly gripping the young man's arm; a struggle ensued, during which the officer kept one hand on his service weapon.
Subsequently, a second young man approached the scene, presumably to intervene in the situation, although the video does not make his intentions entirely clear.
The officer drew his weapon and fired at this second young man—who immediately fell to the pavement—without any verbal warning being recorded in the video.
Following the shot, a crowd began to gather at the scene amidst shouts and expressions of shock over what had happened to the young man in Herrera.
The case sparked numerous reactions on social media, with citizens demanding that authorities clarify the circumstances surrounding the deceased young man's death.
Media personality Ramón Tolentino spoke out publicly and shared a longer version of the incident's video on his social media channels.
Tolentino described the officer as an "animal" dressed as a police officer—stating there was no other way to describe him—and called for him to receive the maximum possible sentence.
He also published a photograph of the implicated officer and publicly asked lawyer Andrés Toribio to represent the young man's family.
In his message, Tolentino explicitly called for securing a 40-year prison sentence for the officer involved in the young man's death in Herrera.
Consequently, public pressure on the authorities intensified following the circulation of this extended version of the video on social media. The National Police Directorate General issued a statement confirming that the officer is now in the custody of the Public Prosecutor's Office.
The institution noted that the Public Prosecutor's Office has taken over the criminal investigation into the case to establish accountability.
The National Police categorically condemned the officer's actions, describing them as unacceptable and contrary to police protocols.
However, it has not been specified whether the officer has been formally suspended from duty while the judicial proceedings against him are underway.
Concurrently, the Central Directorate of Internal Affairs is conducting an administrative process to determine disciplinary liability.
The institution expressed its condolences to the family of the young man from Herrera who lost his life during the police intervention this Friday.
Finally, the case continues to spark reactions as the family and segments of the public await concrete criminal accountability
